Electronic Drums
by Roland
Peeler Drum Center has the area's
largest selection of electronic drums and percussion equipment. One of
our most popular brands are those made by Roland. Electronic drums have reached amazing levels of sonic realism and
playability. Some of the most important advantages electronic drums
offer are: (1) They provide the drummer
with a multitude of different drum sounds including drumsets appropriate for
virtually any style of music, including orchestral, Latin and world percussion
sounds, sound "effects" and even vocal, guitar and other instrumental
sounds. This capability makes them perfect for recording studios, and for
drummers who play in musical settings where the ability to switch from a
"Rock" set to a "Country" set to a "Jazz" set to a "Funk" set
etc. would be useful.
(2) The drum pads on most current electronic
drumsets have almost
totally silent "contact sound", due to their soft rubber or Kevlar mesh pad
surfaces, so they are perfect for the person wishing to put on
headphones and play drums at home without bothering the neighbors or the
rest of the family. Also, since the actual playing of the pads is
almost silent, they are perfect for any low volume situation where the drums
need to be kept in balance with the rest of the music through the PA system.
This is ideal for Church music programs where a full, powerful, modern drum
sound is desired but where volume constraints make it impossible for the
drummer to really "lay into" an acoustic drumset without overpowering the
rest of the music. With electronic drums, all those powerful "phat"
sounds heard on studio recordings are available but the drum volume is able
to be controlled and blended with the rest of the instruments easily at the
sound board.
(3) Many of the more popular electronic drum
"brains" have built in sequencers which are capable of playing
pre-programmed music background tracks in a variety of musical styles,
perfect for practicing as well as "segue" use between songs or as a soloing
background.

Roland TD-20
Electronic Drumset |
| The
TD-20 V-Pro kit is Roland's flagship
electronic drum set. Featuring Roland's "COSM"
sound modeling technology, virtually any drum sound imaginable can be
created from the ground up. Starting with one of the raw drum
waveforms, the user can "virtually" change the size/depth of the
drum, it's shell material, the type of drumhead it has, the type and
amount of muffling on the head, the type of room the drum is to sound like
it is in, and in the case of snare drum samples, even the tension of
the snare strainer can be adjusted. While the massive sound creating and
editing capabilities are the high points of the TD-10 module, keep in mind
that it comes "factory programmed" with an extensive palette of
drum and percussion sets suitable for use in any style of music. The
included "V-Cymbal" pads have unsurpassed playability and
amazing "positional sensing" capabilities, and are even "choke-able"
by grasping the edge of the cymbal after the initial hit. A built in music sequencer loaded with tons of great
sounding music backgrounds in various styles is included which is perfect
for practicing, soloing or segue use in live performance when the
drummer wants to "carry the show" on his own.
Size/number of pads: (2) 10"
pads, (3) 12" pads, new "V-Cymbal" pads
including hi-hat, ride & 2 crashes.
Number of trigger inputs: (15), 11 used in typical setup, (4)
auxiliary inputs available.
Audio outputs: Mono, Stereo, and (8) direct outputs.
Features: New stand comes fully assembled with all wires loomed
and hidden inside tubing.
Colors available: Black

The V-Stage kit is Roland's scaled down
"V-Drum" which features the TD-8 sound module, capable of
the same "COSM"
sound modeling technology of the TD-20 sound module which is standard on
the TD-20 V-Pro kit (above). The
main difference between TD-8 module and the TD-20 module is that although
it still allows the creation/editing of virtually any drum sound
imaginable, it does so in a less graduated way. The simplicity of the TD-8 module
and its' large sound library is advantageous to the player not wishing to get too involved with
"brainy" sound editing. Compared to the TD-20, the
TD-8 only has 4 audio outputs which can be used as (1) single Mono out,
(2) Stereo out or (3) Four discrete outputs which the user could use, for
example, as (1) bass drum (2) snare drum (3) all toms and (4) all
cymbals. This would allow these four distinct groups to be sent to a
live sound board or recording console and kept discrete for better sound
mixing/balancing. The V-Stage kit has 12" realistic cymbal pads
(kit at right is pictured with older style PD-7 pads) which are "choke-able"
by grasping the edge of the pad after the initial hit. A built in music sequencer loaded with tons of great
sounding music backgrounds in various styles is included which is perfect
for practicing or soloing or segue use in live performance when the
drummer wants to "carry the show" on his own. Size/number of pads:
(3) 8" PD-80 single zone
pads, (1) 8" double zone pad (for snare), (1) KD-80 upright bass drum
trigger, (2) CY-12 cym/hat pads, 1 PD-7 hi-hat pad.
Number of trigger inputs: (10), 8 used in typical setup, 2 extra,
usually used for extra cymbal pad and extra 4th tom pad.
Audio outputs: Mono, Stereo, or possible assigning of 4 discrete
outputs for more control when recording or running through a PA
Features: COSM sound modeling technology like the V-Session/Concert
kits described above, but on a more limited scale. Mesh pads similar
to the TD-20 V-Pro kit, while smaller, feel more
natural than rubber pads and are near silent. Upright KD-80 bass
drum trigger, and simple, ultra light, easily portable frame.
Colors available: White pads on a charcoal gray frame

The Roland V-Tour kit is an evolution
of the V-Club kit (shown below) and features the same TD-6 sound module
and the recent addition of a dual zone PD-80R mesh snare pad, new KD-8
upright bass drum trigger which is able to accommodate double bass drum
pedals (not included) and the new FD-8 hi-hat control pedal. The TD-6 sound module has great sounds,
many of which are taken right out of the TD-8 module. It is however
very user friendly and editing capabilities are kept minimal compared to
the TD-20 or TD-8 modules. Several important sound parameters are
still fully editable though, and the user can make and save his own
drumsets. The cymbal pads are "choke-able" by grasping the
edge of the pad after the initial hit. A built in music sequencer loaded with tons of great
sounding music backgrounds in various styles is included which is perfect
for practicing or soloing or segue use in live performance when the
drummer wants to carry the show on his own. |

The V-Club kit is Roland's answer to the
call for an electronic drumset with great sounds and playability which is inexpensive,
portable and easy to use. The TD-6 sound module is the same as used
on the V-Tour set shown above.

| The Roland TD-3
V-Compact kit is the latest affordable easy to use electronic kit from
Roland. It features the new easy to use TD-3 sound module with new
PD-8 pads, CY-8 cymbal pads, KD-8 upright kick trigger (double pedal
capable) and new FD-8 hi-hat controller. The TD-3 module includes
114 new high-quality sounds, 32 drum kits and onboard ambience and
compression effects. Also included is an enhanced "rhythm
coach" feature with helpful rhythm training exercises. Outputs
are Left (Mono) and Left/Right stereo. The TD-3 V-Compact is shipped
configured as a "four piece" set (bass/snare/two toms with
hi-hat and cymbals, as shown at right), but extra trigger inputs allow for
expandability such as the addition of extra tom or cymbal pads. |

Roland's SPD-20 Percussion Pad is the perfect
electronic "add-on" for the drummer/percussionist wishing to
have a huge palate of electronic and acoustic drum/percussion sounds at
his disposal. It has hundreds of drumset, orchestral, latin/world
percussion, electronic/techno, vocal, sound effect and even a few self
terminating "rhythm loop" sounds. The 8 top surface pads
are actually "double layer", allowing double density sounds to
be programmed, or twin sounds which respond according to how hard the pad
is hit (for example, a soft hit plays a splash cymbal, a hard hit plays a
crash cymbal, or any other combination of any of the SPD-20
sounds. (4) rear trigger inputs (double zone) can be used with PD-7
or PD-9 pads to get 8 more playable surfaces (pad center/rim), each of
which are also "double layer" as described above. The SPD-20
has two audio outs which provide Mono or Stereo output, and any sound
sample can be panned from full left to full right, if stereo isolation is
desired.

The HP-15 HandSonic percussion pad is
Roland's answer to the long awaited call for an electronic percussion
controller dedicated to Latin/World percussion sounds, which is playable
with "hand technique" such as that used on congas, bongos and
other ethnic hand drums. The HP-15 HandSonic can actually
recognize the area being struck and whether or not the player is laying his
hand across the surface to mimic the production of "mute"
tones. For example, in the "Conga" program, hit the lower
right pad and you get an "open" conga tone. Hit nearer the
edge of the low right pad and you get a sharp "open slap"
tone. Lay your left hand across the left side of the surface and hit
those same areas and you get the "muted" version of those same
sounds. AMAZING! And such controllability isn't only resident
on the Conga sounds. The Bongos, Djembes, Tablas, Dumbeks and many
other of the "World" percussion drums have the same kind of
capabilities. Not limited to Latin/World sounds, the HP-15
HandSonic also has tons of drumset sounds (you can actually plug in a
bass drum pedal trigger and hi-hat controller and use it as a drumset!).
A built in sequencer with lots of cool play-along backgrounds in
World/Latin/Pop/Rock/Jazz styles is also included, and you can even record
your playing on the HP-15! Another very cool feature is the
light beam sensor at the top of the unit which will play any sound
programmed just by waving your hand above it!

Roland's SPD-6 Percussion Pad is the low cost
alternative for the drummer/percussionist desiring a small palette of good
electronic drum sounds. It has 6 individual striking surfaces and
it's small size makes it perfect for placement within a drummers acoustic
drumset (a optional baseplate can be attached to make the unit stand or
rack mountable using any standard multi-clamp . It is very easy to use and programming/editing
functions are kept very
minimal. It can be run on a DC power supply or with
batteries.

TD-20 Module - The original Roland
"V-Drum" sound module is available separately as well as being
the heart of the V-Pro kit. It has
nearly unlimited capabilities in the creation of new and unique sounds
because of Roland's exclusive COSM sound modeling technology, and it's full
MIDI implementation, this module would be ideal to use in a high level
recording or MIDI production studio. One of the most important
features this module offers for serious production studio use is the eight
fully assignable direct audio outputs which can be used to keep up to eight
instruments or instrument groups it different channels of the
recorder/mixer so that volume, EQ, effects and other signal processing can
be applied selectively during final mixdown. Keep in mind that all
Roland drum modules accept acoustic drum triggers very well, so if you are
hoping to trigger a set of acoustic drums using "stick-on" or
"rim" triggers the TD-20 will work, although some of the dynamic
sensitivity, buzz roll capabilities, brush capabilities and positional
sensing features will not be as effective as would be with Roland mesh
pads.
|
|
|
TD-8 Module - Aside from being at the heart of
the V-Stage set, the TD-8 module is also available
separately. It's huge library of internal sounds, the user-friendly nature of it's control panel and
it's four fully assignable audio outputs make this module perfect for
smaller project studios who don't need the overwhelming power of the TD-20
module. The TD-8 is also very useful for those searching for a
powerful module to "retro-fit" onto a pad set or controller of
another brand. The trigger inputs are fully adjustable for
sensitivity and threshold allowing use of pads from different
manufacturers. Keep in mind that all Roland drum
modules accept acoustic drum triggers very well, so if you are hoping to
trigger a set of acoustic drums using "stick-on" or
"rim" triggers the TD-8 will work, although some of the dynamic
sensitivity, buzz roll capabilities, brush capabilities and positional
sensing features will not be as effective as would be with Roland mesh
pads.

Roland's new TD-3 module, which
comes standard on the V-Compact kit shown above, is perfect for the
ground-floor electronic drums user. Ultimate simplicity and ease of
use coupled with high-quality sound samples make it an excellent choice in
an affordable sound module. It has a library of 114 sounds, 32 drum
kits, built in ambient effects and an enhanced Rhythm Coach feature to
help drummers improve their timing while practicing with the on-board
rhythm training exercises. |
|
|
V-Cymbals - Roland's most innovative addition
to the now legendary "V-drum" family of electronic drum kits are
their V-Cymbals.
They are rubber coated disks in the shape of real cymbals which have near
silent stick contact sound and have special mounts and edges with just the
right about of flex, allowing them to "give" much like a real
cymbal when struck. The dynamic sensitivity and positional sensing
of these cymbals is amazing. The hi-hat can actually recognize if it
is being hit with the tip or shoulder of the stick, producing a different
sound for each just like a real hi-hat. The ride cymbal uses two
cords and can have three
zones: bell, regular shoulder sound, and edge. The crash cymbals
even "choke" like real cymbals when you grab the edge with your
hand! While features like the positional sensing and dynamic
sensitivity of these cymbals are certainly strong points, probably the
most important advantage the "V-Cymbals" offer over regular
round "pads" is their more natural "feel" when
played. The "human interface" issue has always been a
barrier to most drummers who sit down behind a set of electronic drums for
the first time and find the idea of playing around an array of same-sized
rubber pads to be very foreign. With Roland's new V-Cymbals,
especially when combined with the natural feeling mesh head pads and
ultra realistic sounds of a V-Pro or V-Stage set, the player can be
more comfortable and feel "at home"
on an electronic drumset than ever before.
*Note* Roland V-Cymbals WILL function
very well with a TD-8, TD-6 and TD-3 sound
modules, however some positional
sensing capabilities, and the "3 zone" capability of the ride
cymbal will not function the same as with the TD-20 module.
