MEGA DRUM CLINIC DAY!
On Saturday, May 31st 2003 we co-sponsored a mega drum clinic day featuring
four great drumset artists. The "Peeler Drum Center Drum Day
2003" was held in a local High School Gym (as a fund raiser for the
schools' music department) and we had a wildly appreciative crowd focused
intensely on the amazing talents and entertaining, motivational
presentations given by each of the artists.
Below are some pictures and descriptions of the
days' events. We hope to do another big clinic day like this next
year. See you then! |
| The first
drumset clinician of the day was Zoro, this being his third time
back to Peeler Drum Center in the past 3 yrs. Aside from having the
tightest, in-the-pocket funk/soul/R&B grooves in the business, Zoro
puts on a great clinic presentation with lots of playing to background
tracks which take the listener through the evolution of contemporary
drumset beats, from early gospel to Motown, Soul, R&B, Funk, Disco,
Go-Go, Hip-Hop and others. Zoro always gives his all, and on
this day he was busting loose at 110% even though he had a hectic travel
schedule (he got off his plane only 1 1/2 hrs before his clinic, arrived
in time to sit down
at the set to dial things in for a few minutes, did the clinic, and then
had to fly right out shortly after his performance to his next gig).
Zoro's appearance was made possible by support from Sabian cymbals,
Evans drumheads, Audix microphones and Vic Firth
Drumsticks. Thanks Z-man! It's always great to have you back
here at Peeler Drum Center! |

|
| As a special
treat to our audience, we were privileged to feature some of the good
friends of Peeler Drum Center in segue performances between the
drumset clinicians. Jesus, Steve, Rico and Miguel were
gracious enough to bring in their drums and lay down some exciting
Afro-Cuban rhythms for our audience. Thanks so much guys! |

|
| Our second
clinician for the day was Russ Miller. Russ was voted one of the top
five touring and recording session drummers in the world! His
outstanding presentation featured lots of great technical information on
meter, timekeeping, subdivision and how a flawless sense of pulse is so essential to the
drummers' role in any setting. Especially interesting was his
demonstrations of various drumming styles including his impressive command
of Afro-Cuban, Latin and Brazilian styles. Russ' appearance was made possible
by support from Yamaha drums. Thanks for an outstanding
informative and motivational clinic Russ! |

|
| Our audience
got a special treat when our friends the "congeros" came
back to the stage to lay down some impromptu Afro Cuban grooves with Russ
Miller after he completed his clinic presentation. The room was
filled with dazzling rhythms and everybody was having fun with the
spontaneous nature of the little concert (especially the artists!). |

|
| Our third
clinician of the day was Billy Ashbaugh, known mostly for his work
as the touring drummer for NSYNC, he has recorded and toured with many
famous artists. He is currently with Pat Benatar.
Billy's presentation was energetic and exciting as he busted out solid
grooves and solos along with funky backing tracks. His easy going
demeanor and charisma had the audience captivated from the start.
Don't let this guys' background as a drummer for "pop" bands
fool you, he's got control and technical chops that just don't
end. Billy's appearance was made possible with company
support from Drum Workshop and Paiste cymbals. Thanks
Billy! |

|
| Our final
clinician was Mike Mangini. Mike is most known for his
recording and touring with Steve Vai and a long list of other highly
progressive rock artists. Mike has developed a unique "symmetrical"
approach to the way he sets up his drumset with toms and cymbals radiating
from the "center out" rather than in the traditional "left
to right" set up most drummers are accustomed to. After playing
a 40 minute drum solo which featured stunning use of double bass drum
pedals and twin cable hi-hats in an amazing demonstration of four limb
ambidexterity the crowd jumped to their feet to give Mike a standing
ovation! Probably few in our audience were prepared for the awe
inspiring nature of Mike's clinic, as most of them appeared to be
mesmerized by his amazing coordination, speed, control and musicality.
Thanks for an AMAZING performance Mike! |
 |
| What's better
than a drummer's day featuring clinics by four of the best drumset artists
in the world? Three of them onstage playing at the same time!
(Zoro had to catch his flight earlier). What a treat it was to see
the distinctly unique styles of Russ Miller, Mike Mangini
and Billy Ashbaugh come together and blend in an exciting "jam
session". The room was full of sound as these three masters
brought our drum day to an exciting close! Thanks guys! |

Mark Schulman -
He came, he rocked, he amazed us! Wednesday,
March 27th, 2002 was the night, Peeler Drum Center the place, and Mark
Schulman the center of attention! In a super drum clinic
sponsored in part by MAPEX drums, highly acclaimed concert and
studio drummer Mark Schulman played and spoke to an appreciative
audience right in our store. Mark is an amazingly versatile drummer,
having played with such rock legends as Billy Idol,
Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks and Simple Minds all the
way to jazz/fusion greats like David Benoit. Some of Mark's
commentaries during the clinic focused on preparedness as a drummer to handle various styles
and musical genres, as well as advice on getting that elusive "big
break" by making sure that people in the business actually know you
exist and are available for work. Mark stressed that having
close-mindedness towards different kinds of music is a self-imposed
handicap that many frustrated musicians have placed on themselves, and
that the only way to "beat the odds" and be employable as a
musician is to be prepared to play as many different styles of music as
possible. We cleared our sales floor and made room for a
really great audience of about 80 people for this clinic and everyone had
a great time! MAN CAN THIS GUY EVER BUST IT OUT! |

Zoro
Returns!
June 15th, 2002, about a year after his
first clinic performance for our store, Zoro returned to give us
his best in an afternoon clinic right in our store showroom. His
presentation features lots of great discussion about classic Soul, Funk
and Rhythm & Blues drumming with lots of great playing along with
background tracks of classic funky tunes. Zoro has toured and
recorded with many artists including Lenny Kravitz, Bobby Brown,
The New Edition, Philip Bailey, Jody Watley and Franki
Valli. Zoro is not only an amazing drummer, he is a
supreme educator and his clinics are informative, fun and entertaining for
everybody, not just drummers! Zoro also did a master class
for a smaller group on the Friday night previous to the clinic. Zoro
is the author of a great book entitled "The Commandments of Rhythm
and Blues Drumming" and three videos about Funk, Soul and Hip-Hop
drumming. Once again Zoro had our audience captivated
and everybody had lots of fun! Zoro's clinic was sponsored in
part by Sabian cymbals, Evans drumheads and Vic Firth
drumsticks. *A little footnote: For this clinic Zoro
got to play one of the new Drum Workshop limited edition 9000
series titanium bass drum pedals for the first time. Even though
he had a couple of them on order for himself, we had gotten ours in stock
already and offered one for him to play for the clinic. He was
thrilled! |
